 Benelli Develops New Engine Platforms Ranging From 250cc to 1200cc

The phrase "on a roll" would be an understatement for Benelli given the current scenario. It is legitimate that everyone at Benelli headquarters has had something that has made them hyperactive. The Italian brand, now owned by a Chinese company, presented a lot of new motorcycles at the CIMA. And now, images of a presentation have leaked online revealing that Benelli is developing up to 10 engines that it will trade-in on its upcoming motorcycles. The engines run between 250cc-1200cc and will be equipped across its entire portfolio.

Benelli's parent company, QJ Motor, recently joined MV Agusta and will handle the latter's distribution in China. The symbiotic relationship will continue to evolve where Benelli will conduct engine research.

Single cylinder engines

The presentation has revealed that Benelli is currently working on a series of single cylinder engines that will displace 250cc, 380cc and 530cc. The engines will be air-cooled to keep costs under control and are being developed primarily for price-sensitive markets. The word on the streets is that Benelli has already started work on the Imperiale 530 and will get the power of a newly developed 530cc single cylinder engine.

Twin motors in parallel

Currently Benelli has three parallel twin units displacing 300cc, 500cc and 750cc. Now the presentation suggests that Benelli is working on new 400cc, 700cc and 900cc parallel twin engines. No further details of the company's end have been revealed, but it's safe to assume that the upcoming TRK 800 ADV and a Leoncino Cross based on the existing model will come equipped with one of the aforementioned parallel twin engines.

3 cylinder engines

Benelli has been famous for its three-cylinder engines which were replaced by the Tornado Tre and the TNT 899. The TNT 899 was also once sold in India and received praise for its maniacal engine and extraterrestrial appearance. This engine platform was put on hold when Qianjiang acquired Benelli, but is now expected to return in the form of the TNT899i. The resurgence of the TNT 899 with a new heart is sure to spell a lot of trouble for other naked middleweight streetfighter motorcycles. Benelli is expected to use an upgraded 900cc three-cylinder engine in the TNT899i. For the uninitiated, he has already revealed his much larger 1,209cc engine than we've seen in the Benelli 1200GT tourer.

4 cylinder engines

Benelli currently has only one 4-cylinder engine in its portfolio that is seen in the updated TNT600i and its faired cousin, the 600RR. The presentation also revealed new four-cylinder engines: a 650cc unit and a 1000cc unit. It is worth noting that Benelli recently introduced a new engine. The unit was a DOHC four-cylinder design and appeared to be liquid-cooled. But wait, there's more! The casings, barrel and engine design appeared to be identical to the previous generation MV Agusta Brutale 1000.

Benelli has been absent from the liter class game since eliminating the triples from the TNT and Tre-K 1130. Benelli might be looking for a way to get into the liter class and this engine could turn out to be the right ticket!
