2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible: Everything You Need To Know

Ever since the first-generation BMW 4 Series Convertible was shown at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, the world has been in love. The problem was that we didn't get a new version for any of the years following its eventual 2014 release. With all that is apparently changing on BMW's 2021 4 Series Convertible, this car should make open-air driving cool again.

A Soft Top with 4 Seats:

This second-generation 4 Series convertible will comprise a fabric soft-top either in classic black or shimmering "Moonlight Black," which gives a beautiful metallic effect when in sunlight —- top choice for Californians and Floridians. This soft-top model will provide you with an extra two inches of headroom compared to the hardtop 4 Series, which is another added bonus for taller drivers.

It's also a 4-seater convertible, making it eminently more practical than many other convertible models out there. The utility is further extended by the additional 1.2 cubic feet of cargo space compared to the first-generation model. You may be surprised to know that despite its prestigious European marque, the 2021 4 Series Convertible will be available from $53,100. It's not exactly "budget-friendly," but it remains competitive for its class and for its quality.

An Aerodynamic and Athletic Performer:

BMW has confirmed that the new 4 Series Convertible will be 5.2 inches longer than the previous model and an inch wide, 0.1 inches higher, and built with a wheelbase 1.6 inches longer than its first incarnation. In short, it's bigger, but it's not just about size; it's also about performance. Enhancements made to the car's aerodynamics include the new soft-top design, improved air curtains and air flap control, and an underbody that is very close to being completely sealed.

The signature front kidney grille will meet the engine's cooling requirements. It features a much-enlarged look that will improve functionality but did cause a bit of a stir when it was first unveiled on the new M4 models earlier this year.

The 4 Series Convertible will be powered by a renewed 2.0L 4-cylinder BMW TwinPower turbocharged engine that brings a nifty 255hp and 205 lb-ft of torque. It has a top speed of 155 mph but can go from 0 to 60 in just 5.9 seconds. Should you opt for the M440i version convertible, you're in for even more of a treat. The M440i Convertible will have a 3.0L 6-cylinder engine delivering 382hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, rocketing from 0 to 60 in just 5 seconds flat.

Hybrid System Available:

BMW is firmly placing itself within the hybrid and electric revolution. The new 4 Series convertible will feature a 48V mild-hybrid system, but only on the M440i and M440i xDrive Convertible models. This one is primarily for the city dwellers, who will draw energy back through deceleration and braking. You'll also be able to recoup power via the electric excess created in the car's "Sport" driving mode.

One more key benefit of the hybrid system is engine preservation. If you've ever been stuck in traffic, idling for long periods, and continually starting and stopping the engine, you may know that those vibrations that are typical when starting are not ideal for the engine. The 4 Series Convertible's hybrid 48V starter-generator can stop that, thus preserving the engine's life and optimum performance for longer. Or if you're like me, just turn off auto stop/start.

Adaptive M Suspension:

The standard suspension with aluminum shock absorber housings should offer a comfortable and supportive ride in any event. However, an Adaptive M Suspension will be standard on the M440i and M440i xDrive, optional on other models.

The critical difference in this system is the continuously adjustable electronic shocks. The adjustable valves mean that each wheel can be optimized individually depending on the specific driving condition and each driver's own characteristics. Various modes such as Comfort, Sport, and Adaptive allow steering, damping, and acceleration to be adjusted perfectly to suit different conditions. It can even use map data from the car's navigation to anticipate the needs for upcoming corners and tricky road features.

Comfort and Technology:

The standard trim level comes with high-quality SensaTec fabric in beige or black. You can easily upgrade to Vernasca leather, however, should you want the real luxury experience. Other old-world features include open-pore oak, maple, or ash trim, or tetragon/mesh aluminum trim effects for the more contemporary look.

There'll be no need to feel unsafe or unconnected when driving in the open air thanks to impressive standard safety features like speed limit information, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and more, with available add-ons. There's an 8.8" touchscreen and an additional 5.1" TFT display between your instruments in the driver cluster.

Embrace the New 4 Series:

With so much talk in recent years of BMW ditching the 4 Series altogether, it's nice to see the return of a much-loved part of the range. With its performance upgrades, comfortable interiors, and far-reaching capabilities and utility, the 2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible should end up being a great convertible for 2021.
